The area around our chalet extends from a lakeside altitude of about 375 meters above sea level to the tops of the highest peaks at about 3'200 meters. This results in a multitude of different climates and habitats which in turn creates a generous bio-diversity within a very small region.
Birdlife is the most obvious wildlife, with a couple of Golden Eagles which nest close by as well as many kites, buzzards and other birds of prey. A wide variety of garden and country birds can also be seen regularly.
Mammals are very widespread in the local woods, with frequent sightings of foxes, squirrels, badgers and roe deer. There is also linx, but we have never had the previlege of seeing one !
You can expect to see many mountain flowers, but in the summertime you will probably need to climb higher up to see the more rare varieties.
For the best sightings, there is a totally wild valley just above our village. It is one of the only places in Switzerland where you can walk for miles with (almost) no trace of human presence. It can be reached by road for a few months each summer... if you know the way !
